What happened to the days when the news was just... the news?
---
They chew the news just like old gum
till every scrap of flavour's gone,
and still they chew it on and on
and on until our brains are numb.
You see, it's not just news today;
the experts on the left and right
are there to show us all the light,
each in a slightly different way.
Some leader has appeared in jeans
in public; you can guarantee
the papers and the BBC
will all have views on what it means,
and all debate in endless din
upon our weary screens and pages,
like learned mediaeval sages
who balance angels on a pin.
I do not need a pile of views;
those that I need, I'm sure to find,
and I can make up my own mind
without this masticated news.
