Here is where my fanfic lives, or any rate such of it as I'm comfortable about putting online. The usual disclaimers apply to all of it: the copyright for the setting and any characters from the original stories belong, of course, to the original authors, and no infringement of said copyright is intended. I do not make, or attempt to make, any profit from these stories, which are written purely for the entertainment of existing fans of the originals. An additional disclaimer further applies, which is that I don't knowingly break canon. I have done my best to ensure that any character appearing in my stories behaves within the limits that the original authors would expect in the circumstances the character has been written into. (Having said that, I later discovered that I had managed to get canon into a massive knot with regard to Mr Wooster, having completely misremembered the order of events. The gist of what happens to him is preserved in my stories, but I inadvertently stretched out the time between his unmasking as a British agent and Gil threatening him, and telescoped the time between that and his arrival at the caves. I can only apologise for that.)
Girl Genius
As the comic's tagline says: "Adventure! Romance! Mad Science!" Who could resist? Not this mongoose, that's for certain. That's why I joined a fan forum, and that in turn was how I came to start writing GG fanfic. You see, the fan forum has an emphasis on roleplaying, and so I thought, fine, OK. I shall create a character. That's not a problem. Then I realised that my character needed a back story, and so I set about writing one on the fanfic board they have over there. And then people started liking and commenting on what I'd written, and I realised I'd just landed myself accidentally in a writing challenge: write a coherent story, on a forum, on the fly, no editing, one episode a day, and get the thing finished before I went away for a few days. I managed it, but I am not doing anything like that again for a good long time. The story, The Case of the Translocated Jäger, can be read in its entirety here, so you can see how I did. I have not cheated by post-editing! This one contains no original GG characters at all, although some are mentioned.
A couple of people on the forum were then kind enough to suggest I should write a sequel. This was lucky, because I already had the beginnings of one in my head. I was very restrained and managed not to write any of it for several days, but in the end it was all too much for me and I ended up turning out the whole thing over the course of five days, this time without posting it on the forum so that I could edit it properly once it was finished. The result was Mrs Chatterjee's Circus. This story has a much more complex plot than the previous one; essentially it's a murder mystery (in fact, the first one I've successfully written), but with added steampunk, circus acts, secret agents and humour. It contains one original GG character, namely Mr Ardsley Wooster. It does stand alone, but it's probably still best to read The Case of the Translocated Jäger first.
Mr Wooster reappears in The Baker Street Irregularity, along with special guest appearances - as the title suggests - from Mr Sherlock Holmes and Dr John Watson. The story is set in London, where Holmes is called in to investigate the kidnapping of a high-profile spark. When Holmes himself also goes missing, it's up to Mr Wooster and his team to track him down, with help from the loyal Watson. This story, finally, has Jägers in something like reasonable numbers, and one or two minor mysteries from the earlier stories get explained here.
The Sarum Paradox is very much Mr Wooster's story, and if you are curious to know how he ended up being so prominent in my fanfic, you might want to click here. There is still a lot of humour in it, but it's probably as well to warn you that it is darker and more angsty in places than the stuff I usually write. Also, TRIGGER WARNING for a) suicidal ideation and b) female-on-male sexual harassment. Most of my work is completely family-friendly, but this one is probably about PG-13. Oh yes, and we have time travel. Lots of it. Other canon characters who appear: Gil, Dupree, Krosp, Higgs, and Da Boyz. Higgs is reasonably prominent, while the others just get short scenes. There is one other character I won't name in advance, for fear of creating a spoiler.
I was going to have Mr Wooster take a back seat after that, but he had other ideas. I basically like writing this character a whole lot too much. The Ambassador, therefore, is a mini-tale involving Mr Wooster and Gil, set several years in the future (from the point of view of the current GG action). It is, of course, wishful thinking, but hopefully no worse for that. Perhaps if I'm really lucky, we'll get the denouement in the real story and I shall be able to retire this one. (And NO, IT'S NOT SLASH. Really. You'll get no Wooster sauce from me!)
Enough! is another short fic (about 2500 words) set during the events detailed here and here. I have taken the liberty of very slightly altering one piece of the original dialogue: Mr Wooster, being British, would not have started a sentence with "Say...", so I have made him say "I say..." instead. The featured characters are those in the linked panels: Agatha, Mr Wooster, Zeetha, Violetta, Krosp, the Abbot of St Szpac, Brother Ulm, and an unnamed monk. Zeetha enjoys winding up Mr Wooster; this story is about what happens when she overwinds him. The episode originally unfolded on Mr Wooster's Twitter (@ArdsleyWooster, for anyone interested), but I thought it would be fun to fill it out a bit and write it as a proper story.
There will be more. If this is your cup of tea, please stay tuned!
